Crypto news: According to Chainalysis, the EU sanctions Vitaly Nikolayevich Kovalev, a Russian national (alias: Stern), calling him a senior member of the TrickBot criminal group and involved in the operation of ransomware such as Ryuk and Conti. Chainalysis said that wallets associated with Stern have cumulatively received more than $300 million in ransom and have conducted funds transactions with multiple ransomware networks, including Diavol, Karakurt, Royal, and Quantum. The EU also sanctions the developer of the information-stealing malware Lummac2, the law-enforcement-resistant hosting service provider Media Land LLC, personnel associated with the GRU’s Unit 29155, and the pro-Russian hacker groups Carr and Z-Pentest.

Media Land LLC is the kind of managed service provider that is the weakest link in the entire chain.

Are Conti, Ryuk, and TrickBot all the work of the same person? This track record is even more impressive than mine.

GRU’s 29,155-strong unit has all been deployed, and it’s getting harder for state-backed hacker groups to remain hidden.
