According to Beating monitoring, Bloomberg cited insiders as saying that OpenAI’s first consumer hardware is a screenless AI speaker. It has a built-in battery, camera, and sensors, so it can be carried around to different rooms with ease, and it can understand the environment around the user.

The device is positioned as an “AI companion.” It can control smart home devices, play content, answer questions, and reply to messages. The system can also call on personal information such as email to gradually learn about the user and proactively provide relevant information.

The device also includes a mechanical structure that can move on its own, trying to make it feel more like a living object. Its voice capabilities will be based on GPT-Live, and it can both listen and speak at the same time.

OpenAI plans to announce the product this year, with sales in 2027. However, since the product is still under development, details may change. Apple has already sued OpenAI for allegedly stealing hardware trade secrets and is seeking an injunction, which could affect the timeline for the product’s release.
