CoinDesk news: OpenAI’s first consumer hardware is a screenless AI speaker. It comes with a built-in battery, camera, and sensors, allowing users to simply move it to different rooms while it understands the environment around the user. The device is positioned as an “AI companion,” able to control smart home devices, play content, answer questions, and reply to messages. The system can also access personal information such as emails, gradually learning the user and proactively providing relevant information. The device includes a mechanical structure that can move on its own, aiming to make it feel more like a living object, and its voice capabilities will be based on GPT-live, enabling it to listen and speak at the same time. OpenAI plans to reveal the product this year, with an expected release in 2027, though the product is still under development and details may change. In addition, Apple has sued OpenAI for allegedly stealing hardware trade secrets and is seeking an injunction, which may affect the timeline for release.

The mechanical structure moves by itself? I woke up in the middle of the night and saw something swaying—it was kind of scary.

A screenless design is pretty interesting, but if Apple loses that lawsuit, will the whole thing be doomed even before it ever gets off the ground?

Set to be released in 2027? It’s already too late.

GPT live real-time conversations sound way better than the current voice mode, but I’m worried about privacy.

The combo of an AI companion with a camera—how does that sound like a cyberpunk horror film?
