“Mbappé’s mindset collapsed” exploded onto the trending list, after Mbappé had 3 shots and 0 on target in the entire match
In the 2026 U.S.-Canada-Mexico World Cup semifinal that just ended, France lost 0-2 to Spain and missed out on the final. In the closing stages of the match, a clash between Mbappé and Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón sparked heated discussion among many fans.
At the 86th minute, with France trailing by two goals, Simón controlled the ball inside the penalty area and deliberately slowed the tempo. Shortly after, Mbappé made physical contact with Simón as he passed by, and the referee showed Mbappé a yellow card. The related footage quickly spread across social media, and many netizens believed that because France couldn’t break the deadlock for so long—combined with the match nearing the point where the outcome would be decided—Mbappé’s emotions fluctuated, which is why “Mbappé’s mindset collapsed” also climbed onto the trending list.
After the match, France’s head coach Deschamps accepted an interview. He said the players were very frustrated, but they had to look at things rationally, and that the team’s poor performance at the technical level was indeed their responsibility. However, he raised a question: does this referee have the level to officiate a semifinal? He has no intention of answering it.
Judging from the match data, Mbappé’s performance in this game was indeed limited by Spain’s key focus.
Across the entire match, Mbappé made 3 shots, with none on target; he attempted 6 take-ons, succeeding only 1 time. In the first half, the three-man French attacking lineup of Mbappé, Dembélé, and Barcola combined for only 57 touches, with Mbappé having just 15 touches. France also had only 2 shots in the first half, with 0 on target.
As a strong contender for this World Cup’s Golden Boot, Mbappé had already scored 8 goals before the match and had tied France’s record for World Cup appearances. However, against Spain’s midfield control and overall pressure, he never managed to get many threatening attacking opportunities.
In the post-match interview, Mbappé did not shy away from the topic of the team’s loss. “In today’s match, from tactics and game plan to our on-the-day performance, we didn’t meet expectations. The things that a World Cup semifinal is supposed to do—we didn’t do them.”
Regarding the match result that the public was focused on, Mbappé said: “We didn’t disrupt Spain’s setup and we let them have far too much possession. With a performance like today’s, we don’t deserve to reach the final.”
As France’s team captain, Mbappé took responsibility proactively. “When you win, you enjoy all the glory; when you don’t win, you have to take the consequences. That’s part of the game, and it’s part of my life. As captain, I have to take responsibility.”
With France eliminated in the semifinals, Mbappé also missed out on a World Cup final for the first time. In the previous two World Cups, he reached the final with France, and in 2018 he helped France win the title.
July 14 is referred to in France as “Bastille Day,” which is France’s National Day—marking the anniversary of the French Revolution.
According to earlier media reports, because a traditional parade ceremony was held on the Champs-Élysées in Paris on National Day, French President Macron therefore did not attend this World Cup semifinal.
But people close to Macron said that if France successfully advanced to the final, he would go to the United States to watch in person. This World Cup final is scheduled for July 19. Macron previously attended the 2018 and 2022 World Cup finals involving France, which he watched in person.
With France losing this time, Macron’s plan to watch the final in the U.S. also fell through.
