Little Fortune God World Cup morning news — Spain beats France 2-0, reaching the World Cup final for the second time in team history
The first semi-final of the Canada–US–Mexico World Cup was held on the 14th in Dallas. Spain beat France 2:0 with one goal each in the first and second halves, and advanced to the World Cup final for the second time in their history, after 2010.
This was the teams’ second meeting in the World Cup; the previous one was the 2006 World Cup Round of 16, when France won 3-1. It’s also the third consecutive year the two teams have faced each other in the semi-finals: Spain won both the 2024 European Championship and the 2025 UEFA Nations League semi-finals, and now they send France home again.
Compared with the starting lineup that defeated Morocco in the quarterfinal, France made two changes for this match: Jo?ameni and Barcola came in for Koné and Doue. Spain kept the same starting lineup that beat Belgium in the quarterfinal, with Ruiz again partnering with captain Rodri in midfield.
In the 10th minute, Rabiot committed a foul near the edge of the box by stepping on Olmo’s foot. The referee awarded a free kick and showed a yellow card; Baena took the kick and hit the wall.
In the 22nd minute, Spain broke the deadlock: Yamal won a penalty, and Oyarzabal scored, sending it to the right upper corner. Maignan, the France goalkeeper, guessed the correct direction but had no answer.
France suffered more bad luck in the 30th minute: their starting center-back Saliba was injured with no challenge and was substituted off. In the 38th minute, Spain produced a fine combination inside the box: Olmo played a back-heel pass to Yamal, who squared it in front of goal; Ruiz’s follow-up was blocked by an opposing player.
Spain kept a tight, targeted limit on France’s top scorer Mbappé’s impact; afterward, he was caught offside twice in a row. In the 43rd minute, France created an opportunity: Rabiot played a through ball, Mbappé accelerated into a run, and Spain’s goalkeeper Simón swept widely out of the box to clear with a tackle. Throughout the first half, Spain had 5 shots, with 1 on target; France had 2 shots, with 0 on target. France were largely suppressed by Spain.
After the break, France made adjustments in midfield—Rabiot, who was on a yellow card, was replaced by Koné. In the 57th minute, France made another substitution: Doue replaced Barcola. But the change didn’t have an effect. In the 58th minute, Olmo held up P?men?cano and teed up P?ro; P?ro broke through one-on-one to score, and Spain went 2 goals ahead. In the 61st minute, Yamal scored from a one-on-one shot, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
After entering stoppage time, Dembélé and Mbappé repeatedly tried shots to pull the game back, but each attempt was dealt with by the opponent.
Spain set or equaled multiple records in this match: they extended their unbeaten run to 37 consecutive games in regular time, setting the team’s longest unbeaten record; they have now scored 13 goals in this tournament, the most goals by the team in a single edition; and they won 6 straight World Cup matches in a row, tying the longest winning streak they set in 2010.
