South Korea moves to crack down on online false information

To crack down on rampant online disinformation, a revised version of South Korea’s “Information and Communications Network Act” officially took effect on July 7. The revised law stipulates that users who willfully spread false information and tamper with network information must bear compensation responsibility of up to 5 times the actual loss. Users who repeatedly violate regulations and whose related content has been ruled unlawful by the courts face a maximum fine of 1 billion won (about RMB 4.5 million). The revised law also requires South Korean domestic internet platforms and overseas platforms such as Google in the US to open dedicated reporting channels for disinformation and to publish transparency reports on a regular basis.
