Two oil tankers of the United Arab Emirates were struck by Iranian cruise missiles in the Strait of Hormuz on July 14. On the Mombasa, one Indian crew member died on the spot, and another eight were injured, including four seriously injured (six Indian and two Ukrainian).

The UAE Ministry of Defense confirmed that the attack took place in the southbound lane of the Strait of Hormuz within Oman’s territorial waters. Both the Mombasa and its sister tanker, Al Bahiyah, caught fire and were damaged; the fire has now been brought under control.

UAE condemns the “blatant attack,” UKMTO issues a warning

In its statement, the UAE Ministry of Defense strongly condemned it as a “blatant attack,” stressing that it retains the “right to carry out a comprehensive counterattack in response to this escalation,” with tensions in the Strait of Hormuz rising again.

At nearly the same time, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Office (UKMTO) also reported that a tanker was hit by an unidentified object about 40 nautical miles northeast of Oman’s Qalhat. The captain reported damage to the starboard-side engine room; fortunately, all crew members were safe. Reuters was unable to immediately verify whether it was the same incident, and Iran’s officials had not yet commented on the latest attack.

Trump calls for fees; Iran retorts the U.S. has no right to weigh in

The day before this attack, U.S. President Trump had just announced he would restore the blockade on Iranian shipping, and he vowed that the U.S. would ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains open, “but with charges.” At the same time, he warned that the U.S. military would launch another round of “fierce” strikes against Iran within the next few hours.

Iran’s Supreme Joint Military Command fired back, saying the U.S. has no right to decide the future of the Strait of Hormuz and will not sit idly by as the U.S. intervenes.

Reports: U.S. military MQ-1 drone shot down

Meanwhile, Iranian local media claimed that a U.S. military MQ-1 drone was also shot down over the Strait of Hormuz late Monday local time by the air-defense systems of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. An Iranian military statement said that any aggressive acts that contradict commitments, as well as Iran’s defensive strikes, will also be adjusted according to the enemy’s wrongdoing.
