According to related reports, Mastercard is considering selling a majority stake in its UK payments subsidiary Vocalink to UK-based banks in response to external concerns about this key asset being held by a US company. The reports say that Mastercard’s internal discussions are still at a very early stage and no formal bids have been made yet. Vocalink is the core operating entity of the UK retail payments system, responsible for designing, building, and operating bank-account-based payment systems. According to data from its official website, the company processes more than 90% of payroll payments in the UK, more than 70% of household bill payments, and 98% of national benefits disbursements. The system also covers a network of more than 47,000 ATMs. (Sina Finance)
