France looks more balanced overall and is expected to reach the final within 90 minutes
The semifinal between France and Spain is arguably the most title-contending clash of this World Cup. France knocked out Paraguay and Morocco on their way, showing extremely strong defensive stability, while Spain continued to defeat Portugal and Belgium, with their ball-possession advantage remaining clear. Both teams have been in extremely high form. Ahead of the match, there was widespread belief that this would be a game where details would decide the outcome.
In terms of the lineup, France’s biggest advantage is still the efficiency of transitions between attack and defense. Mbappé remains one of the most explosive players in world football. Dembélé’s wing breakthroughs can keep creating danger, while the midfield’s interception ability can effectively limit Spain’s continuous pass-and-control. Once France wins possession successfully, three to four passes can quickly form a shooting opportunity—this is the area Spain needs to watch most closely.
Spain’s greatest weapon is possession. Young players like Yamal and Pedri are technically refined and can keep recycling the ball to find gaps in France’s defensive line. However, against France’s physically strong back line, Spain will find it difficult to control the tempo as comfortably as in previous matches. If the midfield gets disrupted and pressed successfully by France, Spain’s back line is likely to expose the space behind them.
In the first 30 minutes, both sides are expected to be relatively cautious. France will actively compact their formation and wait for counterattacks, while Spain will try to take control of the tempo. As the match goes on, France’s counterattacking speed advantage will gradually become more evident. Mbappé is likely to use one quick burst to find the back of the net. Spain may be able to pull one back, but France’s overall experience is greater, and they handle pressure in key matches better.
