#IranClosesStraitOfHormuz

Iran says the Strait of Hormuz has been closed, while the United States denies that it has fully shut down. Due to security risks, shipping traffic has dropped significantly, but U.S. officials say some merchant vessels are still transiting under protection.

Key reported developments at the moment include:

* The United States has launched a third round of strikes on Iranian military targets, including missile and drone launch sites, naval forces, communications, and coastal surveillance systems. U.S. Central Command said it hit more than 300 targets over three nights.

* Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy announced that, following an incident involving a merchant vessel, it will close the Strait of Hormuz “until further notice.” Iran says the merchant vessel ignored navigation orders. Iran said it issued warning signals and forced the vessel to stop.

* The United States says the ship did not receive warnings, but was instead attacked, and it is treating the incident as a justification for the recent strikes.
* The Strait of Hormuz normally carries about 20% of the world’s seaborne oil trade; therefore, any sustained disruption would have a major impact on global energy markets and shipping.

More broadly, many analysts still describe the conflict as a gray-zone conflict; that is, a serious military escalation aimed at exerting pressure without triggering a full regional war. However, the risk of miscalculation is significantly higher, especially where both sides suffer substantial military or civilian casualties, or where other countries become directly involved.

At this stage, the situation is highly volatile, and it should be interpreted cautiously before both sides’ claims are independently verified against each other.
