WSJ: Apple is treating OpenAI as the next Android, buying time with lawsuits first
The Wall Street Journal believes this lawsuit continues Apple’s playbook from when it moved to block Android. Jobs once vowed to launch “thermonuclear war” against Android, and Apple then fought an eight-year legal battle with Samsung and other manufacturers.
This time, before OpenAI’s AI hardware has even been released, Apple has already struck preemptively. The lawsuit could slow OpenAI from recruiting Apple employees, and it would also increase legal risks for its hardware development.
OpenAI has entered the hardware market by acquiring io Products, founded by Jony Ive, hoping to develop a device set that reduces users’ reliance on phone screens. Apple’s own AI product progress is slow, so it needs even more time to prepare for the next round of device competition.
But a lawsuit can only delay a rival—it cannot help Apple build the next-generation product. Whether Apple can hold onto the iPhone ultimately still comes down to the products.
