Ecuadorian government minister Nathalie Morillo on the 7th said that President Daniel Noboa has ordered the reopening of the country’s land border crossings in the southern Loja Province that border Peru. By then, all land border crossings between the two countries have resumed operations.
Morillo posted the news on a social platform that day, saying: “We temporarily closed the southern border located in Loja Province to curb arms smuggling and strengthen border control. Today, after assessing the effectiveness of this measure, President Daniel Noboa has decided to reopen the border.”
Morillo said that a joint security action mechanism, made up of the national police of Ecuador and the armed forces, will continue to deploy forces in border areas to ensure border control and the safety of Ecuadorian people.
There are three land border crossings between Ecuador and Peru in total, two of which are located in Ecuador’s southern Loja Province. Since last December, as part of security measures, the Ecuadorian government has suspended passage through the two border crossings of Macará and Zapotillo in Loja Province. (Xinhua)
