Former ByteDance intern who was sued for $8 million is now building a world model, with a valuation of $200 million

According to Duodongcha Beating monitoring, NeurIPS 2024’s best paper first author Tian Keyu has reportedly entered the world model startup arena. An insider said the project was incubated and invested in by Meng Xing, a partner at Wuyuan Capital. It has already raised several tens of millions of dollars, with a valuation of about $200 million.

Business registration information shows that this year Tian Keyu has founded multiple AI companies in Beijing. Beijing Lantank Network Technology Co., Ltd. is 60% held by him; its business covers AI hardware, intelligent robots, and AI technology R&D. Another company, Beijing Lanzhitan Network Technology Co., Ltd., has registered capital of $1.9 million.

Tian Keyu previously interned at ByteDance. ByteDance accused him of tampering with code, attacking the team’s model training tasks, and starting in 2024 suing for compensation of RMB 8.02 million. The case has been accepted by the court, but no publicly available verdict has been found yet.

After that, Tian Keyu, as the first author, won NeurIPS 2024’s best paper with the VAR image generation framework. VAR uses a coarse-to-fine “next-scale prediction.” The paper says it outperforms diffusion Transformer in terms of image quality, inference speed, and data efficiency.
