On-chain data | Do whales starting to buy coins necessarily mean prices will rise?

Whenever the market hears news like “whales buying large amounts of Bitcoin,” it sparks discussion among investors. However, whale activity can’t be interpreted on its own—it needs to be observed together with other data.

If large amounts of Bitcoin are moved from exchanges to cold wallets, it usually indicates that holders are inclined to keep them long-term, which may reduce selling pressure in the market; but if large amounts of Bitcoin are transferred into exchanges, it may also mean that some capital is preparing for trading or taking profits.

The biggest value of on-chain data isn’t telling us that the price will definitely go up or down tomorrow; it helps us understand what market funds are doing.

When price, trading volume, ETF fund flows, and on-chain data all move in the same direction, the market trend is typically worth paying closer attention to.

The problem is that retail investors see whales buying and just follow along; by the time they’re ready to dump once the whales move into the exchange, you won’t even have time to get out.

On-chain data has never been a single signal. It needs to be viewed together with ETF flows and futures open interest—just looking at whale moves alone makes it easy to get harvested.

About the fact that a giant whale is buying coins, I think we need to see where it’s withdrawing the funds from. If it’s being pulled out of an exchange, that’s indeed a positive signal—but if it was bought off-exchange via OTC, it might just be changing hands.

To put it simply, whales are also people, and they can make mistakes too. Back in the 2018 surge, weren’t there plenty of big players who copied things while they were still halfway up the mountain? Don’t glorify these people.
