I watched Kung Fu Women’s Football yesterday. I went in with expectations that it might be at least half as good-looking as Shaolin Soccer, but after watching it, my heart is full of mixed feelings.
The vibe is still there, though. Stephen Chow’s nonsensical style is in it—there’s Kung Fu football, lots of jokes and references to Shaolin Soccer, the Golden Bell Shield, the Bagua Palm, and so on. In the end, there’s also the creative Tiger-style shot from Captain Tsubasa, plus a two-player shot 😂
But rationally speaking, compared with Shaolin Soccer, there’s still a clear gap. The script depth isn’t enough—especially in the early part, it feels particularly awkward. Then there are a lot of scene changes that feel abrupt in the middle, and the emotional storyline is especially sudden…
If you want to go for the nostalgia, you can check it out. Just don’t set your expectations too high. Based on this post-credits scene, if there’s a sequel, it might be that the Shaolin team could play a match against the Emei team 😅
