FIFA President: Expanding to 64 teams is still being discussed; every country should have a dream of participating in the World Cup
Recently, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was interviewed. Infantino said that the format with 48 participating teams has been a huge success: “Every team played at a high level. Teams from all major confederations scored goals and at least earned 1 point. In Africa, 9 teams reached the knockout stage. In the last World Cup, Africa had only 5 teams participating. This precisely proves the importance of including all teams—giving them the opportunity to take part in the World Cup.”
Someone has already suggested increasing the number of participating teams to 64. Infantino said: “This issue will definitely be studied and discussed by the relevant committees after the conclusion of this World Cup. When hosting the World Cup, the core idea is to do it for the whole world—not just Europe and South America, but truly for the entire world. Every country should have the dream of participating in the World Cup. You can see that the competitive level of each team is extremely high, and football standards around the world are continuously improving. If we don’t give smaller countries a chance to participate in the World Cup, they will lose the motivation to keep making progress.”
