A 25-year-old South African international footballer died by suicide. Ahead of today’s two matches, players from both teams and the crowd at the venue observed a moment of silence together.
Jaden Adams, 25, represented South Africa during this World Cup and helped the team reach the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time in their history. The South African Football Association and related parties have recently confirmed news of his passing, and the football community has expressed condolences.
Adams was born on May 5, 2001, and began his professional career with his hometown club Stellenbosch. In August 2020, he signed his first professional contract with Stellenbosch. He made 139 appearances for the first team and helped the club win the 2023 South African League Cup. In January 2025, Adams joined the powerhouse Mamelodi Sundowns, and with the team, he went on to claim the top honors in both the South African Super League and the Africa Champions League.
At the national team level, Adams helped South Africa finish the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations campaign in third place. He was also named to the World Cup squad for Canada, Mexico, and the United States, and he played in all 3 group matches, one of the key contributors to South Africa’s historic qualification from the group stage. In the second round of the group stage, South Africa drew 1-1 with the Czech Republic. In that match, Adams—who was substituted off—sat on the bench without saying a word, unusually silent. It was only afterward, when the South African Football Association released a condolence statement, that people learned that just a few hours before kickoff of that game, Adams’ grandmother, Marianna, had passed away. He came on to play carrying the immense grief of losing his closest loved one forever.
