French telecom giant Xavier Niel plans to spend $5.9 billion to acquire a 16.2% stake in Vodafone, becoming its largest shareholder

Vodafone Group announced recently that French billionaire and telecom tycoon Xavier Niel has reached a final agreement to acquire all shares of Vodafone held by the Emirati telecom group through its investment vehicle Vega. After the deal is completed, Niel will hold 16.2% of Vodafone’s shares, officially becoming the company’s largest shareholder. Spurred by the news, Vodafone’s share price on the London Stock Exchange surged sharply, at one point recording a 14% intraday gain—the largest rise in recent times. (Sina Finance)
