$BTC Iran announces closure of the Strait of Hormuz
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard has officially announced a temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The condition for reopening navigation is that the US stops its military interference in the Middle East. The trigger was that foreign-flagged vessels violated rules by attempting to force passage while disregarding maritime area control—an assertive countermeasure in an escalation of tensions between Iran and the US. The strait carries nearly 30% of global seaborne crude oil transport and 20% of LNG shipments, making it a key artery for global energy. Market disruption in the short term has quickly become evident.
On the market side, Brent crude surged rapidly. Safe-haven funds flowed into gold, US Treasury yields moved higher, and high-valuation sectors such as US tech and storage faced pressure. Prior expectations of a more hawkish Fed policy were further reinforced: the probability of rate cuts this year was sharply reduced, and a strengthening dollar continued to weigh on both the yuan and Northbound capital. The alternative-route capacity gap is huge. Rerouting via the Cape of Good Hope will significantly lengthen voyage times and raise shipping costs, and global inflation pressures are set to return.
However, in the long run, Iran’s blockade has clear self-inflicted drawbacks: its own crude oil exports are simultaneously obstructed, and prolonged closure would seriously damage its fiscal position. Therefore, it is likely to be a maximum-pressure tactic rather than a long-term shutdown of navigation. For domestic audiences, higher crude import costs will suppress manufacturing and logistics industries, while also accelerating momentum for energy diversification and the domestic substitution logic behind energy storage and solar photovoltaics.
Key watchpoints going forward: whether the US and Iran restart negotiations, the durability of oil prices, and signals for the restoration of navigation through the strait.
