Samsung Electronics’ first chip plant in Yongin, South Korea, is planning to start production 1 to 2 years ahead of schedule.

Yonhap News Agency cited a report saying that Samsung Electronics will advance the start of production for the first production line at its South Korean Yongin semiconductor plant from 2030 to 2031 to 2029. The related adjustments are in line with the policy direction of the local government to speed up the construction of the Yongin National Industrial Park.

The report said that if the wafer fab starts operation as scheduled, it will not only help Samsung respond more quickly to a surge in AI chip demand, but also accelerate the formation of a local semiconductor materials, components, and equipment industrial ecosystem.

Samsung Electronics previously announced that it will invest a total of 2030 trillion won across locations including Pyeongtaek and the Yongin semiconductor cluster.
