134 rural and township banks exited within the year, as reforms continue to accelerate

Since 2026, the process of restructuring and consolidating rural and township banks in China has continued to accelerate. A reporter’s tally shows that as of July 9, 134 rural and township banks have been approved to exit this year, reducing the total number of institutions to 1,048 and continuing the trend of accelerated exits since 2025. Industry insiders believe the county-level financial ecosystem is being reshaped; streamlining the number of rural and township banks will help improve the quality and efficiency of county-level financial services.
