According to Bie Jie News, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse said at an event at the University of Kansas School of Business that after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) sued Ripple in 2020, the company had seriously considered shutting down. He said the government has near-infinite resources, and closing the company might have been the easier option. He added that Ripple could have proportionally distributed the XRP it held to shareholders and informed the SEC that it no longer held XRP, but doing so would have led to hundreds of people losing their jobs, so Ripple ultimately chose to continue fighting the lawsuit. The SEC previously accused Ripple of conducting an unregistered securities offering by selling XRP, and the two sides later reached a settlement.

Brad really held up through this round—if it were me, I probably would’ve bailed earlier.

So did they finally settle? The SEC didn’t win, and Ripple didn’t lose—was it a win-win?

An unlimited pool of resources from the government versus a single company—this battle was never winnable in the first place.

The University of Kansas School of Business is really good at hosting people for this event—the students were listening in a daze, stunned and confused, like they couldn’t even process it.

Hundreds of people losing their jobs may indeed be a reason, but to put it bluntly, they just can’t bear to give up that slice of the pie.
