Iranian delegation suspends Iran-US talks in protest of Trump’s threatening remarks

Reuters Swiss Biligenberg June 21 (Xinhua reporter Wang Lu, Meng Fanyu) The Iranian delegation holding Iran-U.S. talks at Biligenberg in Switzerland on June 21 suddenly paused the negotiations, in protest against threats issued by U.S. President Donald Trump to Iran that day.

That day, Trump warned on social media that Iran should immediately stop the “proxy” actions of its “agents” in Lebanon, otherwise the United States would launch strikes against Iran again, “and with more force.”

According to Iranian media reports, the Iranian delegation protested the above remarks to the U.S. side, left the venue, and paused the negotiations that had already lasted 80 minutes, shifting to internal consultations. The report said Iran was working out an appropriate response plan.

Meanwhile, the head of the Iranian delegation and Speaker of the Iranian Islamic Consultative Assembly Qalibaf said in a post on social media: “They’d better be careful with their words. Our armed forces are ready to respond to them in different ways.”

In response to this incident, Lebanon’s “Al-Sahra” TV reported that Iran’s response was clear: unless Trump apologizes for his threatening remarks and Israeli forces withdraw from southern Lebanon, the Iranian delegation will not return to the negotiating table.

Xinhua reporters at the scene saw that the talks had been extended beyond the originally scheduled timetable. It remains unknown whether the Iranian delegation will return to the negotiating table afterward.
