Head-to-head history — Argentina won both matches, but both were nail-biting

Argentina and Switzerland have faced each other only twice in World Cup history. In 1966, Argentina defeated Switzerland 2-0. In the 2014 Round of 16, Argentina needed to wait until extra time—only two minutes left—when Di María scored the winning goal to break the deadlock.

Argentina holds the advantage in the historical record, but the process has never been easy. That 2014 showdown is especially worth being cautious about—back then, Switzerland’s strength was far below what it is now, yet they were still able to hold out for 118 minutes. Today’s Switzerland features top defensive players such as Akanji, Kobel, and Zaccaria, with an all-around upgrade on both offense and defense.

Many fans dismiss Switzerland based solely on their head-to-head record. But as Switzerland’s head coach Yakin said: “Facing the defending champions is an opportunity the team has worked hard to earn.” Switzerland has no pressure—only opportunity. Ahead of the match, Di María recalled the 2014 winner: “That was one of the most important goals of my career. I hope I can do it again tomorrow.”
