Norway’s “X factor” — cohesion matters more than star power

The outside world’s attention on Norway has focused on Haaland and Ødegaard. But Norway defender Børjotuft believes: “England has many stars, but we have them too. And I feel that, from the spectators’ point of view, we work better together as a whole.”

The transformation of Norwegian football is clear to see from the shining club Bodo — they reached the Europa League semi-finals in the 2024/25 season, and next season they secured a place in the Champions League knockout round. Patrick Berg is a key figure in Norway’s midfield, and Børjotuft praised him: “He’s an important player for us, and also our leader… He may be one of Norway’s best players at this World Cup.”

Børjotuft also noted: “Norwegian football has already done a lot in terms of controlling the ball.” In the 1/8 final in which Norway beat Brazil 2-1, their possession rate reached 66%. This Norway team can not only hit back on the counter but also control the ball to overwhelm their opponents. Cohesion is Norway’s biggest X factor. Norway’s teamwork and tactical execution may trouble England more than Haaland’s individual ability.
