Haaland’s record-breaking night—scoring in five straight World Cup matches? Only J. Rod has done it before

Haaland’s form at this World Cup has been downright terrifying. In four matches, he has scored in every game, netting 7 goals. The last player to score in all of their first five World Cup matches was 2014’s James Rodríguez. If Haaland scores again tomorrow, he will become the second player in history.

Norway’s tactical setup is built entirely around Haaland. In a 4-2-3-1 formation, Haaland plays as the lone striker at the front. He doesn’t need many touches—one cross, one penalty spot opportunity, or one set-piece chance in the box could be enough to rewrite the game. After the Round of 16 match, Norway coach Solbakken said: “Beating Brazil proved that we deserve to be here. Haaland is one of the best in the world, but winning is about the whole team.”

Norway’s attack doesn’t rely on Haaland alone. Ødegaard’s through balls, as well as the wing breakthroughs by Nusa and Særløtt, are all key parts of Norway’s offensive system. Haaland has averaged 4.2 shots per game at this World Cup, with a goal conversion rate as high as 42%, the best among all participating players. If England’s back line can’t keep Haaland in check, Norway will have another chance to pull off a miracle.
