Cuba’s Foreign Minister Rodríguez said on the 7th that, based on current prices, the United States’ long-standing blockade of Cuba has caused cumulative losses to Cuba totaling $178.7 billion. According to a message posted by Cuba’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on social media, on the day of the UN General Assembly it was decided by an overwhelming majority to continue debating the “need to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade by the United States.” During the debate, Rodríguez said that from March 1, 2025 to February 28, 2026, losses inflicted on Cuba by the U.S. blockade reached a record $8.083 billion, up 7% from the previous year. After the victory of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the U.S. government adopted a hostile policy toward Cuba. In 1962, the United States imposed an economic and financial blockade and a trade embargo on Cuba. Since 1992, the UN General Assembly has annually reviewed draft resolutions submitted by Cuba calling on the United States to lift the blockade; for many years, the related resolutions have received overwhelming support.
