[Hong Kong Weather] No. 1 typhoon signal takes effect; the Observatory assesses whether to upgrade to No. 3
The Hong Kong Observatory said that the No. 1 Standby Signal is currently in effect.
The Observatory said that today in the territory will be generally cloudy, with bouts of squally showers and thunderstorms, and later some areas will have heavier rain. Temperatures range from 27 to 31 degrees. Winds will blow from the east to the southeast, moderate to fresh, with occasional strong winds over offshore areas and high ground. The sea will be rough. The maximum UV index forecast for today is 7, with the exposure level considered high.
Tropical depression strengthens into a tropical storm
The Observatory said that the tropical depression in the central part of the South China Sea has strengthened into a tropical storm, and it is expected to take a northwest track to approach Hainan Island. The No. 1 Standby Signal will remain in effect at least until 12:00 noon today.
The Observatory will then assess whether it is necessary to issue the No. 3 Strong Wind Signal again, depending on changes in the intensity of the tropical cyclone, the distance of its strong wind area from the Pearl River Estuary, and local wind conditions.
Rainfall on the weekend may be quite heavy at times
The Observatory expects that on Saturday the winds will remain quite strong, with rainfall sometimes quite heavy and accompanied by squally thunderstorms. Weather will remain unstable over the following one to two or three days.
On Saturday, temperatures range from 26 to 29 degrees. On Sunday, it will remain generally cloudy, with a few spells of showers and squally thunderstorms, and at first some areas will have heavier rainfall.
