July 11 news: Johannes Heidecke, former head of OpenAI’s original safety system, has announced his resignation to employees.
Meanwhile, OpenAI is restructuring its security team’s organization, further merging the security team with the research team. Former Senior Vice President and Alignment lead Mia Glaese will be promoted to Vice President of Research and Safety, responsible for coordinating related work. All of OpenAI’s security teams will report to her going forward.
Saachi Jain, who previously led the security team, will serve as interim head of the safety system and report to Glaese.
OpenAI Chief Research Officer Mark Chen said that, because the frequency of model training has increased significantly and the product release cycle has also been noticeably shortened, security coordination is more difficult than ever. OpenAI hopes that, through the new organizational structure, the security team can get involved earlier in model, product, and release decision-making.
