Vitalik proposes a compromise between two AI camps: agree in advance that if extreme circumstances arise, a pause will be initiated

Golden Finance reports that on July 11, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin posted about the controversy surrounding AI superintelligence. He noted that the AI field currently has two camps: one believes superintelligence is inevitably coming before 2040 and must be controlled as soon as possible; the other believes AI is just ordinary technology, and that calling for pauses is about controlling humans. Vitalik said he is not sure which side is correct and is open to slowing down or pausing, but he opposes the narrative pushed by large AI companies that “open source is harmful,” saying it is essentially about power centralization.
Vitalik proposed a compromise: both sides can agree in advance that if certain extreme scenarios (such as a super pandemic, large-scale unemployment, etc.) truly occur, they will agree to initiate an AI pause; if these scenarios do not happen, they will proceed according to the other side’s plan. He acknowledged that all response measures have flaws, and that humans can only choose between “imperfect” and “even more imperfect,” but defensive technologies such as formal verification, cryptography, and secure hardware are worth advancing in both worlds.
