OpenAI responds to issues with unclear prompts causing high compute mode to consume excessively: has urgently reset Codex and ChatGPT Work quotas

Odaily Planet Daily — OpenAI Codex core member Tibo said on X that previously it was too easy for users to enable a high-compute mode, but the impact on usage limits was not explained sufficiently. A large-scale redesign of the desktop app made common functions such as chat and projects harder to find. In addition, promotional material over-focused on ChatGPT Work, leading some Codex users to mistakenly believe Codex would be phased out in the future. Furthermore, the new version also caused issues with some multi-agent workflows, plugin functionality, and other experiences.

To address the above problems, OpenAI has rolled out its first batch of improvement measures, including adjusting default settings and the model selector to prevent users from accidentally misusing high-cost configurations; fixing multiple plugin submission issues; optimizing Codex’s presentation within the product; and resolving some desktop experience problems.

In addition, over the past 24 hours, OpenAI has been collecting user feedback, analyzing usage, and engaging in communication with users. Although the market has shown strong interest in GPT 5.6 Sol and the web and mobile versions of ChatGPT Work, OpenAI also acknowledged that this update has multiple issues.

As of now, two usage-limit top-ups for Codex and ChatGPT Work have been completed. The next, larger-scale update will be rolled out next week. At that time, chat and project functions will return to the sidebar in a more familiar, customizable form. The platform will also enhance the visibility of usage limits and reset times, further clarifying the respective use cases for ChatGPT Work and Codex.
