Golden Finance reported that on July 11, the White House in the United States confirmed on the 10th that U.S. President Trump had removed two sitting members of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission from their positions. Earlier reports said that on the 9th, Trump removed Democratic members Thomas Hicks and Benjamin Hoffland from their roles and accepted the resignation of Republican member Christie McCormick. The commission’s other Republican member, Donald Palmer, had left the post earlier this year. By then, all four seats on the commission were vacant. In a statement to the media on the 10th, the White House said the president “reserves the right to remove relevant individuals, who may not be fully committed to ensuring the safety of U.S. elections and that every lawful ballot is counted.” The White House statement did not give specific reasons for Trump’s move. However, U.S. media reported that the Election Assistance Commission had rejected an executive order signed by Trump, which required voters to provide proof-of-U.S.-citizenship documents on the national voter registration form.
