The General Administration of Customs today released statistical data showing that in the first five months of this year, China’s goods trade imports and exports grew by 15.3% year-on-year, maintaining a steady growth momentum.

According to customs statistics, in the first five months, the total value of China’s goods trade imports and exports was 20.68 trillion yuan, up 15.3% year-on-year. Among them, imports and exports with ASEAN, the EU, and Africa increased by 16.6%, 10.3%, and 18.2%, respectively. Trade with Belt and Road partner countries involved imports and exports worth 10.57 trillion yuan, up 13.6%.

In May alone, China’s foreign trade imports and exports were 4.45 trillion yuan, up 16.9% year-on-year. Exports and imports rose 13.8% and 21.5%, respectively.

Lu Daliang, Director of the Statistical Analysis Department of the General Administration of Customs, said that since the beginning of this year, under the guidance of leaders’ diplomacy strategy, China has actively deepened pragmatic cooperation with global economic and trade partners, injecting stable momentum into the operation of international trade. As of May, monthly imports and exports have exceeded 4 trillion yuan for three consecutive months, maintaining a good operating trend.

Starting from May, China has fully implemented zero-tariff measures for countries that have diplomatic relations with Africa. In the first five months, China’s imports from Africa were 1.14 trillion yuan, the first time in the same period in history that they have surpassed 1 trillion yuan, up 18.2% year-on-year. In May alone, China’s imports from Africa were 95.13 billion yuan, up 15% year-on-year, with growth continuing for nine consecutive months.

This year is APEC “China Year.” In the first five months, China’s imports and exports with other APEC economies were 12.31 trillion yuan, up 17.4% year-on-year. The trade scale accounted for nearly 60% of China’s overall foreign trade, and economic and trade cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region remains active.
