According to Beating monitoring, before Apple sued OpenAI, the two sides had already been fighting a months-long talent war. As the number of employees jumping to new jobs rose into the hundreds, Apple began raising pay and expanding responsibilities for the employees being recruited, hoping to keep them.

In its complaint, Apple said that more than 400 employees have already joined OpenAI. The recruited personnel cover departments including product design, display screens, antennas, supply chain, and hardware procurement.

OpenAI’s hardware chief Tang Tan is alleged to be the primary recruiter. He previously worked at Apple for about 25 years and was responsible for iPhone hardware development. OpenAI is preparing a range of AI devices, including screenless smart speakers, glasses, recording devices, and wearable brooches. Apple is concerned that its own talent and confidential information are helping OpenAI build a new hardware rival.

Both sides had long been dissatisfied with each other. In May this year, OpenAI had considered bringing claims of breach of contract against Apple over the underwhelming performance of ChatGPT’s integration, but ultimately did not sue.
