BlockBeats, July 11, according to Axios: The Trump administration has asked Iran to publicly confirm no later than Saturday that the Strait of Hormuz remains open, and to pledge to stop firing at commercial vessels. U.S. officials said the request was delivered to Iran through direct channels as well as regional mediators.

The U.S. side believes that Iran has recently carried out attacks on commercial vessels in and around the Strait of Hormuz, in violation of a memorandum of understanding signed by both sides a few weeks earlier, putting the fragile ceasefire agreement at risk of breaking down. The report said Iran’s foreign minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian Alaragchi, and Oman’s foreign minister, Badr al-Busaidi, are expected to meet in Muscat, the capital of Oman, on Saturday to discuss the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.

The U.S. hopes Iran will issue a public statement after the talks, pledging to stop the attacks and confirming that the shipping route through the strait is open and that no transit fees will be charged. U.S. officials said that some progress has recently been made in the U.S.-Iran nuclear negotiations, but the Hormuz crisis has raised U.S. concerns about Iran’s ability to carry out more complex agreements. If Iran refuses the relevant demands, the U.S. warns it will take further action.
