SK Hynix CEO: Memory chip shortages may last beyond 2030
BlockBeats News, July 11 — SK hynix CEO Kwak No-rung said that the memory chip shortage currently troubling the computer, automotive, and equipment markets may continue beyond 2030. Kwak said that customers are signing long-term contracts because they “believe the shortage situation will last longer.”
The company and its peers—Samsung Electronics and Micron Technology—have become major beneficiaries of the AI boom. Large-scale spending by data center operators is driving demand for traditional memory and a new type of high-bandwidth memory. This rush has made it even harder to meet widespread demand for storage chips, resulting in shortages in areas such as computers, smartphones, and cars.
Kwak said that SK hynix’s analysis indicates the shortage could last into the next decade. Customer signals also show that people expect they will be unable to obtain enough storage chips for some time.
