Crypto Circle News reports, citing Bloomberg, that the U.S. Department of Justice plans to drop the criminal charges against Bitclub Network founder Matthew Goettsche, and to close the case with a resolution barring any further prosecution. The final terms are still pending confirmation by both sides. Goettsche was indicted in 2019. Prosecutors alleged that he ran a cryptocurrency Ponzi scheme from 2014 to 2019, illegally raised approximately $722 million through a fake Bitcoin mining business and a referral recruitment scheme, and was suspected of conspiring to commit wire fraud and selling unregistered securities. The case was originally scheduled for trial in October this year. The DOJ said the case has lasted nearly 7 years, and it is currently seeking to recover some of the investors’ losses. The decision to withdraw the charges is not related to his lawyer’s lobbying efforts.

Bitclub’s old Ponzi scheme finally seems to be winding up, but does the “prohibition on re-prosecution” amount to a get-out-of-jail-free card for the founder?
