Golden Finance News, July 11, SK hynix CEO Kwak-roo Jung said that the memory chip shortage currently plaguing the computer, automotive, and devices markets may continue beyond 2030. Kwak-roo Jung said that customers are signing long-term contracts because they “believe the shortage situation will last longer.” The company and its peers—Samsung Electronics and Micron Technology—have become major beneficiaries of the AI boom. Large-scale spending by data center operators is driving demand for traditional memory as well as a new type of high-bandwidth memory. This scramble has made it harder to meet broad demand for storage chips, leading to shortages in areas such as computers, smartphones, and cars. Kwak-roo Jung said SK hynix’s analysis shows that this shortage could last into the next decade. Customer signals also indicate that people expect they will not be able to obtain enough storage chips for some time.
