Spain’s national team heads into this quarterfinal as the clear favorite, and I see no reason to doubt that La Roja will reach the semifinals. Spain’s main trump card is their phenomenal defense: they have not conceded a single goal at the tournament, setting a World Cup record with six straight “clean sheet” matches. Goalkeeper Unai Simón, meanwhile, has not conceded on the World Cups since 2022—his clean-sheet streak has already surpassed 600 minutes. At the same time, Belgium have conceded five goals, and their defense looks far more vulnerable.
What’s more, the Belgians have serious personnel losses: due to a rupture of the cruciate ligaments, the tournament ended for key defensive midfielder Amadou Onana, and defender Zeno Debast is injured. Spain, by contrast, has received reinforcements—Nico Williams, Yeremy Pino, and Víctor Munnós have all recovered from injuries.
Of course, Belgium are dangerous on the counterattack—their 4-1 demolition of the United States confirms that. But against Spain’s ultra-organized defense, they will have little space, and losing Onana deprives them of balance in the center of the pitch. Spain, meanwhile, even if their attack isn’t always perfect, controls the course of the match thanks to Rodri, Pedri, and Lamine Yamal. Opta’s supercomputer gives Spain a 69.5% chance of reaching the semifinals, and bookmakers also see them as overwhelming favorites.
My prediction is a 2-0 win for Spain. Belgium will fight hard and create a couple of chances, but they won’t be able to break this Spanish wall at the decisive moment. Spain will turn their territorial advantage into goals in the second half.#PredictWorldCup🇪🇸vs🇧🇪
