After growing up, I finally understood my father’s helplessness at the time. After the country’s reform and opening up, opportunities were everywhere—individual businesses going into commerce, township and village enterprises, and export-oriented processing. The nation’s GDP grew by more than 100 times. When I was a kid, I always blamed my father: with such a massive wave of change, why didn’t he manage to get on the train.
