EU upgrade could prompt Meta investigation into its platforms, which may face large fines

Jinse Finance reported on July 10 that, according to The Wall Street Journal, the European Union said Meta failed to adequately protect users from the harms of addictive design on Instagram and Facebook, and the EU is therefore upgrading its investigation, which could result in the company facing hefty fines. On Friday, the European Commission released preliminary investigation results, finding that Meta violated the landmark EU Digital Services Act. The Act requires the world’s largest online platforms to assess and mitigate risks. If the preliminary findings are confirmed, each platform under Meta could face a fine of up to an amount equal to 6% of its global revenue. (Jin10)
