In our senior year of high school, in the office, our homeroom teacher said this to a girl in our class who did fairly well at “service and guides” as a special talent but whose family situation was quite ordinary: “Your appearance isn’t bad. When you go to college, you must protect your reputation. Be smart. If you’re confident you can win and secure a good, high-quality middle-class man, then you have to hold on tightly. If you can take the postgraduate entrance exam, then go for a postgraduate degree. This is the easiest way for you to break away from your family and cross class lines.”
