Crypto news: the web data scraping company bright data announced the establishment of a $1 million “bug bounty” to eliminate bad actors. The company is one of the largest providers of web data collection services globally, and its CEO, O. Lončhína, said it hopes to reward “white-hat hackers” who identify vulnerabilities or potential abuse within the industry. As data collected from the internet has become an important source of information for training models for AI companies, bright data and its peers have seen their business volumes surge. At the same time, law enforcement agencies are closely monitoring how some companies in this field obtain data, and whether these methods could pose risks to customers. Lončhína warned that broader enforcement actions against data collection services could hinder the development of AI.

Runchina’s comment is interesting: on one side they’re dangling bounties to hunt for vulnerabilities, and on the other they’re worried regulators will crack down on AI development—so it’s basically “fighting on both sides,” isn’t it.

$1 million isn’t that much for companies like this. The marketing impact, though, is maxed out—just the old Web3 playbook.

Can white-hat hackers really “shave some wool” off this round? $1 million sounds pretty tempting, but the entry requirements probably aren’t low.

Data scraping here is too murky. Bright Data itself is one of the biggest players; now that it’s running a bounty program, is this self-checking or dumping blame on competitors?
