US initial jobless claims slightly declined, labor market remains stable

Jinse Finance reports that on July 9, the number of people filing for initial unemployment benefits in the U.S. last week declined, indicating that although job growth slowed in June, the labor market remains stable. Data released by the U.S. Department of Labor on Thursday showed that for the week ending July 4, initial claims for unemployment benefits, seasonally adjusted, fell by 2,000 to 215,000 (the prior value was revised up to 217,000). After rising in late May and early June, initial claims have retreated somewhat. Economists largely believe that the earlier increase was noise. Even though June’s job growth slowed significantly and April and May’s nonfarm payroll employment data were revised down, economists said the labor market has not seen any substantial change and remains in a “slow hiring, slow firing” state.
