According to an FT report, four Labour Party MPs are pushing for amendments to the Representation of the People Act, seeking to make the existing temporary ban on crypto political donations permanent and further tighten UK political donation rules. The related proposals also include reviewing the start-up funding for new political parties, cutting the campaign spending cap by 15%, and strengthening “know your donor” checks by factoring foreign influence risk into due diligence. The proposal comes amid controversy over Reform UK after it accepted £15 million in cash donations from Thai crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne and £4 million in cash donations from crypto investor Ben Delo; the UK government said it will consider the relevant amendments before the next Tuesday’s parliamentary review.
