French referee Letexier, who officiated the Argentina 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt, has been engulfed in controversy over his decisions. Nearly 40k fan comments flooded his social media, with overwhelming dissatisfaction and some extreme personal attacks. Under pressure, he was forced to shut down his personal account.
His officiating standards throughout the match were widely criticized. Argentina players committed multiple tactical fouls but received only verbal warnings. A violent foul by Molina, who raised his hand to strike an opponent's face, should have resulted in a red card but was ignored. In contrast, Egyptian players received frequent cards for similar physical contact, totaling five yellows and one red, while the coaching staff was also sent off. A goal by Egypt was disallowed for a minor foul, and during stoppage time, Salah was pulled down in the box, but the referee refused a VAR review. Subsequently, Enzo scored the winner. These controversial decisions ignited fan outrage.
Even though Letexier himself believes his calls were correct, the massive criticism has severely disrupted his personal life. The Egyptian Football Association has officially submitted a complaint, and FIFA will review the match's officiating. If multiple major errors are confirmed, the referee will likely be disqualified from further World Cup matches.
I think FIFA should quickly launch an investigation to clarify the facts, determine who is right, and if the calls were not seriously wrong, clear the referee's name and silence the online mob.
If the referee was indeed biased, appropriate punishment should be handed out. For example, cancel Argentina's final goal and let the two teams play a penalty shootout to restore fairness to the World Cup. Additionally, if intentional bias is confirmed, a criminal investigation should be opened to trace the root cause and look into possible gambling manipulation behind it, in order to calm public anger. $SOL
