United Kingdom Lawmakers Push for Permanent Ban on Crypto Political Donations - Crypto Economy
Labour Party legislators in the United Kingdom are preparing a parliamentary rebellion to permanently ban political donations in cryptocurrencies, according to The Guardian.
MPs from the United Kingdom’s cross-party anti-corruption group are gathering support for four amendments to the Representation of the People Bill, including one that would replace the moratorium in place since March with a permanent ban enshrined in legislation.
Liam Byrne, the Labour chair of the business committee pushing the cryptocurrency amendment, stated that politicians from Reform UK appear willing to go to “extraordinary lengths” to avoid scrutiny of their finances, and called on his colleagues to back the changes as a safeguard for democracy. The amendment had gathered at least 20 signatures so far.
The United Kingdom is debating the controversy surrounding the funding of Reform UK and its leader Nigel Farage, who is being investigated by the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner for accepting a gift of £5 million from millionaire Christopher Harborne.
Farage denied any wrongdoing. Among the remaining amendments, proposals include reducing the electoral spending limit from £34 million to £24.4 million, establishing controls over donations with a possible foreign origin, and limiting initial party funds without declaring their source. The bill returns to the House of Commons on July 14.
