Deep Tide TechFlow message: On July 09, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that ahead of the latest AI model’s public release, the company made multiple adjustments during consultations with the Trump administration. Altman said that in the weeks before OpenAI’s comprehensive rollout of GPT-5.6, it engaged in collaborative, two-way communication with senior U.S. officials such as Commerce Secretary Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Bessent. Under pressure from the government to release in stages, the new model series was initially made available only to certain partner organizations.

After OpenAI said it had received approval from the U.S. government leadership, GPT-5.6 is set to be opened to the public on Thursday. Altman did not detail the specific adjustments OpenAI made during the process, but said the government is testing the new model and looking for potential issues. “I think as long as the process is understandable, fair and fast, it’s a good thing. The government seems to indeed share these goals—I guess next time, the next model will go more smoothly. We understand the process and are clearer on how to respond.” (Jinshi)
