According to Beating monitoring, PrismML, an AI lab co-founded by Caltech mathematician Babak Hassibi, says it has compressed Alibaba’s open-source model Qwen3.6-27B so it can run on the iPhone 17 Pro.

Qwen3.6-27B is a dense model with 27 billion parameters. During inference, all parameters are involved—this is not an MoE model that activates only a portion of the parameters.

PrismML says the model size was reduced from about 54GB to under 4GB, with no obvious decline in performance. It can be used for complex conversations, reasoning, Agent tasks, and coding tasks.

Apple has already reached out to PrismML and discussed how to use this technology. Apple has long wanted to put more AI on-device, but advanced Siri still relies on cloud-based models.
