France — from the Round of 16 to the quarterfinals, Les Bleus crush the competition

The France national team has been the most consistent team so far in this World Cup—no question.

They won all three group matches, smashing in 10 goals while conceding just 2: a 3-1 win over Senegal, a 3-0 clean sheet against Iraq, and a 4-1 demolition of Norway. Mbappé kept scoring goals back-to-back, while midfielders Tchouaméni and Rabiot firmly controlled possession; their two-pronged attacking plan—flank breakthroughs and set pieces—proved consistently stable and effective. In the Round of 16, France beat Sweden 3-0. In the quarterfinal against Paraguay, facing a “bus-parking” setup plus a “logging” foul-heavy approach, France scraped through 1-0 to advance, with Mbappé scoring from the penalty spot.

That match against Paraguay was extremely ugly. Paraguay were highly aggressive with their tactics throughout the game; France received three yellow cards. The opponent committed multiple fouls but did not receive corresponding punishment. After the match, Mbappé went straight on the attack: “The opposition thought we’d play in tuxedos, but we also know how to play dirty.” Deschamps was even harsher, saying the opponent “used every possible method.”

But France still wins. No matter how the opponent plays, France always has an answer. That’s the mentality of a championship team.

In terms of statistics, France is one of the top-scoring teams among the quarterfinalists, tied with Argentina for the lead with 14 goals. Mbappé has already scored 7 goals in the tournament, along with 2 assists, and is temporarily first in the FIFA composite ranking (attack 8.71, creativity 7.52, defense 4.71). His teammate Olise leads the assists chart with 5. Defender Upamecano has a defensive rating score of 7.67, ahead of Spain’s defensive midfielder Rodri.

All three lines of France have world-class players leading the FIFA strength rankings. With this depth in the squad and this kind of stable performance, isn’t the real question—who else could be the favorite?

On odds, France sits firmly at the top with 2.87. Opta’s supercomputer gives France a 27.62% chance of winning the title—again, highest on the list. Polymarket’s prediction market implies France’s implied probability of winning the title is over 35%.

All the data points to the same answer: France is the strongest team in this World Cup.
